Safety in Salvador — reported risks & precautions
Salvador's risk map is neighbourhood-specific. Drink spiking is "common" in the bars of Barra and Rio Vermelho, the two going-out districts (August 2026) — never leave the glass, never take an open drink from a new acquaintance. Mugging follows the clock in Pelourinho: fine by day under the tourist police, robbery risk after dark despite them. The Lower City — Comércio — is a daylight business district and a no-go at night, and the outlying favelas are not places to enter without a local guide. The backdrop, stated bluntly in the file: Bahia carries higher crime than Brazil's Northeast generally.

Transport, ads and Carnival
Movement rules: Uber only, never street taxis; carry the day's cash and nothing more; passport in the hotel safe. The street tier — R$25–70 on Rua Carlos Gomes, R$70–100 brega in Itapuã — does its business in exactly the residential layer where the tourist police are largely absent (August 2026). The ad layer has its own scam pattern: fake photos are common enough that the forum maintains a standing complaint thread for false advertising across Salvador and the Bahia interior — running since 2016, updated December 2025 — and the working answer is a fresh photo or video before any meeting. Carnival, February–March, deserves its own line: phone theft from passing motorbikes is the signature crime of the crowds, and an April 2026 safety note recommends a cheap second handset, the primary phone off the street, and Find My Device switched on. The standing verdict, August 2026: more caution than Fortaleza or Recife — Salvador rewards experience.

Universal precautions
- Tell someone you trust where you are; share live location if the environment feels off.
- Keep cash for a taxi home separate from your night-out budget.
- Decide your limits before drinking — alcohol and negotiation do not mix well.
- If something feels wrong, leave. No deal is worth your safety.
