Safety in Amsterdam — reported risks & precautions
De Wallen's physical safety record is unusually good — police and bodyguards nearly 24/7, the main threat pickpockets — but the 2026 file adds a named pattern: fake police. A Romanian trio (arrested 18 June 2026, five-plus episodes at Sloterdijk station and one in Rotterdam) asked foreign tourists to show wallets for a "counterfeit check" and lifted cash from them; the real police show ID with name, photo and number, and any check verifies by phone at 0900-8844.

The fine print and the etiquette
The municipal ban layer lands on tourists who don't read it: public cannabis smoking has carried a €100 fine since 25 May 2023, public alcohol costs 95, and the photography ban at the windows is absolute — bodyguards have destroyed phones, and the quarter treats it as the one unforgivable. The pushy layer is unlicensed "guides" and street offers: the licensed market has storefronts, and anyone selling it on the sidewalk is selling something else.
The market's own risk is billing, not violence: the Wallen menu mechanic (extras after payment for what was discussed) is the failure mode readers keep reporting, and the defences are procedural — agree everything at the glass, confirm what "basic" includes, count the minutes against the price. The Singel/De Pijp procedure reads calmer at every step; the safest sentence in Amsterdam is still the national grid: 50/15, 100/30, 200 the hour, in daylight, at a quiet door.

Universal precautions
- Tell someone you trust where you are; share live location if the environment feels off.
- Keep cash for a taxi home separate from your night-out budget.
- Decide your limits before drinking — alcohol and negotiation do not mix well.
- If something feels wrong, leave. No deal is worth your safety.
